Wastewater is transported to the wastewater treatment plant Zuidoostbeemster
The wastewater is screened. In the process, toiletpaper (cellulose) is removed by the finescreens.
Filtered wastewater is less dirty. As a result, the regular treatment process becomes more energy efficient. After treatment, clean water flows back into the system
Cellulose is extracted from the screened material and converted into PLA (Poly Lactic Acid).
The PLA is transported to producers of (bio)plastic goods such as plastic bags and dinnerware.
Knowledge acquired in the process is documented by STOWA. Other waterboards can put this knowledge into practice for their own use.
Cellu2PLA is a project of Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier, Attero en knowledge center STOWA.
